Jet
character"It takes a certain kind of person to face the very depths of despair, and still continue to fight." [1]
— Jet, Chapter 812, "Naval Colony."
Description
Jet is a strong-minded Government agent originating from the Outskirts of NQSC. She was the first person Sunny met after Awakening, and the first to become his mentor, teaching him the rules of his new world. [2]
Appearance
Jet has short, raven-black hair and icy blue eyes. Her flawless skin was smooth, supple, and as white as snow. She wore a dark blue Government-issued uniform: a jacket adorned with silver epaulettes, a black tank top, and black leather boots. An insignia on her left sleeve revealed three stars, signifying her rank as an Ascended. [3]
Sunless claims that the shadows became deeper and the temperature dropped by a couple of degrees when she was present. [4]
Her icy blue eyes were colder than the deepest reaches of a frozen hell. [5]
— Chapter 493, "Advent of Death."
In Chapter 753, she was described as exquisitely beautiful. Her ironed uniform was creaseless, and her epaulettes glistened. [6]
Notable Abilities
Aspect
[Aspect Name]: Unknown.
[Aspect Rank]: Supreme. [7]
[Dormant]: Allows her to absorb the essence of those she kills, nullifying the need for soul shards. This is necessary for her to survive because of her Flaw. [8] [9]
[Awakened]: The ability to directly strike the soul of her enemy. [7] [8] Despite this, her attacks were not true soul attacks and were simply physical attacks that struck the soul. [10] Although a small detail, it is an important distinction.
[Ascendant]: The size of her soul core can increase, allowing her to oversaturate her core without limit. [9]
[Transcendent]: Assumes the form of a ghostly wraith. [10]
Transformation Ability
In her transformation, Jet appeared more as a revenant, both dreadful and dreadfully beautiful, than a human. [10] She could turn into an intangible wraith, her body like mist, albeit not the mundane kind. It could not be scattered by wind or dispelled by flame. Additionally, it could exist underwater and phase through solid objects. This was because it was not mist at all, but was a manifestation of her power. [11]
In this state, Jet is weak against phantoms; they can attack her soul directly, but she gains nothing from attacking them as they are an extension of another being and contain no essence.
[Aspect Legacy]: Mist Blade
After defeating Undying Slaughter, a chilling mist surrounded Jet's body, slowly taking the shape of a ghostly blade. A war scythe with steel so dark it reflected a dreadful sheen, frost patterns decorating the curved blade; it seemed to absorb all warmth from the world, emanating a frigid sense of lethal cold. [12] Despite appearing as a weapon, her legacy was more of an innate ability than a Memory (which is the standard). This Legacy Relic was later named 'Mist Blade.'
Notable Abilities:
Summoning the relic required no essence. [13]
Despite the relic's natural form being a scythe, it can transform into five forms in total. These include: a khopesh [Egyptian sickle-shaped sword], misericorde [medieval dagger], bec de corbin [French polearm], standard scythe, and war scythe. [13]
The form could be changed mid-battle, at no cost to Jet. [14]
It can absorb and contain the souls of those it slays, retaining the strength of the strongest soul. For example, if Jet kills an Unholy Titan, it would be equal to a Divine Memory of the Seventh Tier. Alternatively, the souls it consumes can be transferred into Jet's soul core, acting as essence. If there are no souls contained within the mist, the blade's strength becomes equal to Jet's own soul. [13]
The blade could contain a total of five souls, one for each of the forms. [15]
While discovering her Aspect Legacy, Sunny speculated that the maximum number of souls it could contain was five, as this was equal to the number of forms it had. Additionally, it is possible that the souls contained could infuse the blade with special enchantments. He also wondered whether Jet's soul would be infused with unique qualities if she consumed the contained souls. [13]
After Jet had slain a Corrupted Terror, its soul gave the Mist Blade a special effect, allowing it to infuse a debilitating lethargy onto whoever was cut by its blade. Powerful enemies could resist the effect, but would still be weakened by every strike. As a result, the khopesh was the most effective against powerful enemies. [15][Flaw Name]: You are dead.
[Flaw Effect]: Jet's flaw states that she is dead, and therefore, must consistently replenish her soul core to keep it from collapsing. [16]
She cannot regenerate essence naturally. After the Fall of Falcon Scott, Jet seemed to succumb to the Winter Beast's plague, laying her life to the snow. Her appearance was precisely like that of a corpse; Her blue eyes were glassy and hollow, her body was lifeless and unmoving. [17]
Once Jet enters essence exhaustion, she enters this state, becoming more like a demented zombie trying to attack whoever is nearby. Her core is shattered, leaking what little essence she has left. Despite this, she still retained some sentience, but would periodically lose control. [9]
When she lost control, demented lights burned in her glassy blue eyes. [18]
Soul Core (Fractured)
It was lightless and shrouded in darkness, almost like his own. A single powerful core burned in its depths, superposed against her heart... the core itself was strange, bizarre, and filled him with an eerie sense of profound unease.
The ethereal orb was irregularly shaped and much larger than it was supposed to be, grossly overshadowing the size of other Ascended cores he had witnessed. Its surface was covered by a net of deep, twisting cracks... no, not quite. It was more like the whole core was assembled from numerous shards, as if it had been shattered once and then crudely assembled back into an uneven sphere.
Some shards seemed to match each other, while others did not fit well. bringing a sense of chaos to an already flawed and fractured, disfigured construct of Soul Reaper's core. However, there was also a certain order and beauty to the ugly disharmony of it.
The patchwork sphere of broken shards shone with furious, radiant light. It was brimming with a stunning amount of soul essence, which was much more than an Ascended should have possessed. However, unlike most cores, this one's radiance was not uniform. Instead, most of the light was concentrated in its depths, while the outer edges were dark and dull.
More than that, thin streams of light were constantly flowing through the cracks of the shattered core and dissipating into nothingness. They were like water slowly seeping out of a cracked vessel. [19]
— Description of Jet's Soul Core, Chapter 863, "Fractured"
During the battle with the Heart of Kanakht, Jet's soul was described as so large it was like a giant star, burning furiously in the cold darkness of her desolate soul. Additionally, she could absorb far more essence than someone truly alive, granting her incredible strength. This strength translated directly into her wraith form. [11]
General Capabilities
In Chapter 862, Sunless describes Jet as frighteningly powerful. Her battle style was brutal and domineering, honed and perfectly sharpened for a single purpose - deliver swift death and utter devastation to her enemies. As he watched her fight, he felt the lethal weight of thousands upon thousands of deadly battles and had never encountered a human being with so much combat experience. Her technique had a certain dark depth, and not even the Saints he had met could match her. [20]
She is proven to be an incredibly formidable opponent, as evidenced in Chapter 2824, where Asterion explains that she is one of two Transcendents who forced him to deal with them personally. [21] Due to her physical prowess and the lethality of her Aspect, she was closer to a Supreme than a Transcendent. The gap between her and the other Saints was too vast. [22]
Jet is the second known Transcendent to escape a Supreme. [23]

Citadels
Night Garden
As the captain of the Night Garden, Jet held a special connection existing deep in the periphery of her subconscious mind. Only when she entered the runic array could this connection strengthen, allowing her to share the emotions of the ship and exert precise control. [21]
History
Early Life
Not much is known regarding Jet's early life; however, it was not without struggle. Jet grew up in the Outskirts of NQSC[2], in a dormitory hive surrounded by gaunt people with waxy skin who were prone to coughing fits. As a child, she was sickly and neglected, wearing threadbare clothes that did not fit.[28]
During her First Nightmare, Jet died. She was young, weak, and frightened, and therefore did not survive. Somehow, she did not remain completely dead and was revived. She speculated that either she had fulfilled some insane condition or her Innate Attribute had allowed her to. In any case, it had to be something special; the Spell would not have seemed impressed and granted her a Supreme Aspect otherwise. [29]
Due to the nature of her Flaw, Jet struggled to find anything to kill, as she was only a Sleeper without access to the Dream Realm. She was invited to the Awakened Academy, and naively asked for help. When asked for details regarding her Aspect, she told them everything. From that moment, she was put on a leash. Despite this, Jet would not do anything differently and was happy with how things turned out, but wished that she had more of a choice. [29] She later stated that this was a mutual relationship, as she was also using the government to provide her with prey to satiate her Flaw, so the leash was entirely voluntary. Jet believed this was much better than what would have happened had she joined a Legacy clan. [30]
No information is available for her Second Nightmare; however, she successfully challenged it before her introduction in the novel. This was evident as she was already a Master before appearing.
First Encounter (Volume 1, Child of Shadows)
As part of her governmental duties, Jet was responsible for watching over Sunless' physical body for three days while he challenged his First Nightmare. Although this was below her pay grade, she explained that due to the increasing number of Nightmare Gates and Awakened casualties in the area, her presence was necessary. Additionally, not many Awakened worked directly for the government like she did, stating that it was the least lucrative and least glorious career for their kind. [2]
"- Would you abandon wealth and fame to work abysmal hours and risk your life, fuelled only by altruism and sense of duty?"
Sunny wanted to say something flattering. Instead, he looked Master Jet right in the eyes and smirked."Of course not. I'm not an idiot!"
—
She stared at him with a humourless expression. Sunny thought that he was going to get slapped again.
But instead, Jet smiled.
"See, I was right. You really are smart." [31]
— Chapter 18, "Absence of Light."
As per protocol, Jet offered Sunless psychological counselling, to which he refused. [31] Later, Jet personally drove him to the Awakened Academy after handling his enrollment, and informed him that he would be asked again, and that he must again refuse. She also taught him that humans are of equal threat and that he must trust nobody with knowledge of his Aspect and Flaw. Additionally, Jet told him to ignore all classes offered at the Academy aside from Wilderness Survival, as this was the most crucial of all, and it was too late in the year to focus on anything else. [32]
"Remember: no one can survive in the Dream Realm alone. That's not an option, that's a fact. Try to get along with your peers, even if they don't treat you well. It might save your life." [32]
— Chapter 19, "Crossing the Bridge."
Government Work (Volume 3, Prince of Nothing)
In Chapter 502, Jet asked Sunless to assist her in hunting an Awakened human, Shadow Blade Kurt. She explained that when Awakened lost control, the Government hunts and executes them quietly, as there are no prisons that can realistically contain them. This was because every Aspect is unique, which demanded equally unique methods of containment; therefore, prisons were not possible. When someone lost control, Jet (and people like her) were responsible for silencing the issue.[33]
Antarctic Campaign (Volume 5, Dread Night)
While Sunless temporarily became an instructor at the Academy, Jet mysteriously contacted him and set up a meeting in the cafeteria. Her uniform was in perfect condition, and her hair perfectly arranged. She explained that she had been promoted and had to attend a special ceremony. As Sunless' birthday had recently passed, Jet gifted him an Ascendant soul shard. Although incredibly expensive, she explains that she acquired it via her rank privileges as a public servant. [6]After explaining the current situation with Clan Valor, Jet summoned a Memory resembling a music box, creating a dome of silence around them. [34] She explained the geography and logistics of the waking world, explaining that the Obel scale had gone out of alignment, similar to when North America collapsed. The growing irregularities triggered a warning for the upcoming Chain of Nightmares set for Antarctica. [35]
Jet explained that the government would be transferring a very substantial part of its military force to Antarctica to stall the inevitable collapse and evacuate as many civilians as possible. They would announce a voluntary mobilisation for both Awakened and mundane humans. [36]
”I want you to leave everything behind, enlist… and come with me.” [36]
— Chapter 756, "Navigation."
When asked why she is going to Antarctica, despite saying that dying there is not worth it, Jet answers that strength is the reason. Watching the continent go up in flames from the sidelines went against her professional sensibility, but strength was the primary motivator for her decision. [37] Jet stated that this campaign would shift the balance of power across humanity, and many new champions would emerge. [37] [38]
"Everything will shift, Sunny… you can either be a part of that shift, or be left behind." [37]
— Chapter 757, "Professional Sensibility."
During the Antarctic Campaign, Jet was assigned the rank of 'Colonel' and became the senior officer of the First Irregular Company. She handled the paperwork for Sunless to become an official government agent, including one with the rank and status of an Irregular Captain. [39] While tasking him with choosing his own Cohort members, she told him that although she had no doubts they would follow his command, he would still need to earn their loyalty on his own. [40] Based on the reactions (or lack thereof) when she brought Sunless, as a civilian, through the deepest parts of the military bunker, it was clear her status and reputation allowed her to bend the rules. Sunless lacked proper documentation or the relevant clearance to enter, but Jet's presence superseded the procedure. [41]
Jet's primary role was to coordinate the Irregular cohorts from afar while they operated semi-independently. [42] Not long after arriving in Antarctica, Jet organised an excursion to hunt a Corrupted Tyrant with her cohort alongside Sunless' and Winter's, as well as Saint Tyris. [43]
Third Nightmare (Volume 7, Tomb of Ariel)
At the very beginning, Jet and Effie took the places of two Riverborn nomads from a tribe descended from survivors of one of the destroyed cities. Due to the river's perilous nature, they were forced to migrate constantly and fend off powerful abominations for sustenance, riding sea creatures as steeds. By the time Jet and Effie joined their ranks, the tribe was already thrown into disarray, already having been reduced to less than a dozen. Due to their Riverborn nature and the river's savagery, no generation survived to adulthood.
Despite their attempts to save the savage adolescents, they stumbled upon a powerful swarm of Drowned and witnessed the end of the last nomad tribe. Jet and Effie were able to escape but were relentlessly pursued until they became lost in the mist, being sucked into a whirlpool and trapped on Wind Flower Island. [44]
Aletheia's Island
During their struggle inside the vortex, Jet and Effie were separated, landing on opposite sides of the island. Faced with this predicament, Jet searched for Effie to no avail. She became lost in the mist and was pursued by Undying Slaughter. [44] When Sunny discovered her, she was leaning heavily on a tree surrounded by fog, hunched and as pale as a ghost. [45]
She was able to send Crow Crow back through the whirlpool, hoping it would find Sunny and the cohort. [44]
Based on Sunny and Cassie's quick response, Jet assumed that they had been on the same island all along, only to learn that the island was stuck in its own time loop, separate from the Great River, and that she had been there for over a year, despite feeling like it had been mere hours. [44]
During the time loop, Jet died countless times at the hands of Undying Slaughter. The total number is unknown.
"What is Undying Slaughter like?"
His expression froze. Struggling to suppress an involuntary shiver, Sunny lingered for a few moments, then said evenly:
". . . She's a horror." [46]
— Chapter 1411, "Monster Preserve. "
After an unknown number of renditions, they eventually broke the loop. Jet finished off Undying Slaughter, unlocking her Aspect Legacy.
Twilight
After arriving at Twilight, Jet remained by the cohort's side, evading Soul Stealer as they navigated the city frozen in time. After Sunny successfully made it to the throne room, Effie sent herself and Jet into the Black Beast Locket to prevent Soul Stealer from enthralling them. [47] Cassie carried the locket around her neck, fending off Soul Stealer, and carrying them out of the city before the blast. [48] After the Dread Lord's defeat, Jet returned carrying Cassie's unconscious body and joined the others in the throne room. [49]
Jet and Effie received a briefing on the events in Twilight the next night, having skipped the majority of the fight. [50]
Heart of Kanakht (Volume 8, Lord of Shadows)
After their Third Nightmare, Jet spearheaded the Western Quadrant Defence Force alongside Effie and Kai, pushing back the Nightmare Creatures to form a defence line. While the others handled the military and diplomatic affairs, Jet primarily handled administration and shot-calling for the government. Four years before this event, the higher-ups of the Government had pooled their resources into the Dream Realm, enforcing the Sovereign's decision to abandon the waking world. Jet strongly disagreed with this strategy and advocated keeping Saints in the waking world, defending the remaining three quadrants to reduce civilian casualties. Despite this, she failed to turn the tide; otherwise, the waking world would not be in such a dire state. [51]
During her fight with the Great Devil, Heart of Kanakht, her power was rendered almost entirely useless against his own. She was doomed to lose, as she was unable to harm his soul until all phantoms were destroyed. [15] Furthermore, the phantoms (or spectres) were part of Kanakht, meaning she gained no essence from destroying them. [11] Unable to destroy each other, they were locked in a stalemate, and she was forced to consume all five of her contained souls:
A Corrupted Tyrant slain in Verge, in front of the First Seeker.
A Corrupted Titan slain in an unknown government Citadel in the Dream Realm.
A Great Beast slain in South America.
A Saint who had gone mad soon after Transcending, and whom Jet was sent to execute.
The Winter Beast, a Great Monster whom she had attempted to hunt and destroy as retribution for the events in Antarctica, but found it already dead. [52]
With Effie and Kai acting as reinforcements, Jet was able to kill the Heart of Kanakht and absorbed part of the Heart into her blade. As a reward, the Spell granted her the hourglass memory. Afterwards, she stated that she was so overworked by the government that even the Third Nightmare was mildly relaxing and felt like a vacation. [26]
Although her Aspect was a bad match, her Legacy Relic was perfect, as killing the Heart of Kanakht meant that it would be upgraded by two Tiers and likely come with an effect with good synergy to her Aspect. [15]
Aftermath of the Domain War (Volume 10, Dark Lord's Dreadful Travelogue)
After the Domain War, Jet had essentially assumed control of the government, since there was no reason for anyone to oppose Nephis. She handled administration and planned the transition of power, allowing the government to work smoothly under Nephis' rule. Additionally, she had also become the de facto head of the House of Night, as the remnants of the Great Clan were absorbed into the government ranks. Jet had taken control of the Night Garden and become the Steward of the South, which Sunny found ironic, since the citadel built by the Daemon of Repose was now controlled by a woman who knew no rest. [53]
Eternal City (Volume 10, Dark Lord's Dreadful Travelogue)
To prepare her for supremacy, Sunless wanted Jet to journey with him to the Eternal City, as he knew it was located somewhere in the Stormsea. [54] In the Eternal City, they encountered the Flesh of Kanakht, which targeted Jet as it could sense a piece of its heart within her.
Escape From Night Garden (Volume 11, Untitled)
As the Night Garden sailed through the Sky Below, Jet and Nightwalker had been working on integrating his aspect into the living ship, hoping to open a portal to anywhere without having to master a new function related to navigation. This research soon fell short, as Jet realised that the six Saints had already been enthralled. [55]
While escaping Asterion, Jet returned to NQSC to find a city-wide manhunt aimed at her. With instruction from Cassia, she escaped to the rendezvous point with the Shadow Clan, where they led her to the Forgotten Shore. [28] [56] Although Lightslayer Revel invited her to join them in their travels, Jet stated that there was no way to satiate her Flaw, and soon needed to leave the Forgotten Shore. [57]
After watching Revel leave with Ling, Jet turned her focus west, to the endless blizzard of the Frozen Wastelands. [57]
"I've met all kinds of people, you know? Powerful people, cunning people, great masters of warfare and the like... even people whose main virtue was that they were inexplicably lucky, which made them more dangerous than all the rest. And among all those people, you'd still rank as one of the most impressive, Miss Jet." [21]
— Asterion to Jet, Chapter 2824, "Civil Engineering"
Personality
"Her cynical loyalty to the mission of preserving humanity was quite ironically much greater than the noble intent of most ardent idealists." [51]
— Chapter 1720, "Hard Day at Work"
Jet is cynical and does not believe in honour, duty, or sacrifice. [36] She was not someone with a bleeding heart, but she took her responsibilities very seriously. Despite her carefully constructed facade, she did care very much. [51] Losing a human city made her feel as though she was personally robbed; it was sad, humiliating, and deeply distasteful. [15] She felt as though any mission failure was her own fault and was angry that the higher-ups had abandoned the waking world. She wished there was someone else from the Outskirts who shared her mindset, but understood it was a pipe dream. [15]
In Chapter 2824, Jet described people from the outskirts as distrustful, vicious, cynical, and tenacious. By nature, this also extends to herself. Additionally, she tends to never enter a room without an exit strategy. [21]
Sunny remained silent for a while, thinking about what she said. He felt that, in a sense, Master Jet was very much like him. Too stubborn to give up, unwilling to let the world have its way… however, there was a big difference between them. While Sunny aimed all that spite and resentment at surviving and elevating only himself, she had chosen something much grander as her target.
Instead of going it alone, Soul Reaper had decided to tie herself down to a much bigger whole. [37]
— Chapter 757, "Professional Sensibility."
Relationships
Sunny
Only a handful of Awakened originated from the Outskirts, so Sunny felt a special kinship with Jet. Additionally, they were both killers, which made them outliers. [58]
As soon as Sunny returned from the Forgotten Shore, Jet visited him in the Awakened hospital to discuss the next steps, further solidifying her role as a mentor. [59]
When Jet was assigned to execute Shadow Blade Kurt, she requested help from Sunny because of the following reasons:
She trusted him.
Sunny and the suspect both had an aspect that gave them a strong affinity for shadows.
Very few people in the Government are suited to kill others, but she knew Sunny was [58]
Furthermore, Sunny returned this trust and told her that shadows were susceptible to soul damage. [60]
When Jet was in her corpse state, Sunny cared for her and ensured that she did not die. He brought her a nightmare core to replenish her essence. [18]
Effie
The very first time they met, Effie was visibly disappointed as she opened the front door, since Jet was not her food delivery. She then mistakenly believed Jet was Sunny's older girlfriend. [33] During their Third Nightmare, Jet and Effie had become very close, and their relationship only continued to grow. [51] Effie's son, Ling, referred to her as 'Auntie.' [57]
Rain
When a Nightmare Gate manifested outside of her school in NQSC, Jet came to her rescue and fought alongside Mongrel. [24] During her training session with Sunny, Rain stated that she wanted to be strong like Jet and called her a true warrior. [61]
Morgan of Valor
Sunny once asked Jet if she was stronger than Morgan. She replied that she would likely lose, but not because she was weaker. Morgan had the resources of Clan Valor backing her: Memories, Echoes, and soul shards. This was more than what Jet had access to. [62]
Julius
On his first meeting with Sunless, he described Jet as a murderous savage and a barbarian who could not possibly understand intricate knowledge. He then stated that she was unlikely to ever advance due to her problematic personality and that nobody would want to help a psychopathic killer become a Saint. [7]Additionally, he claimed that while Jet was not the most powerful Awakened, she was one of the most feared. This was because her attacks disregarded flesh and instead targeted the soul. [7]
Cor, Wake of Ruin
Jet seemed to have a close relationship with Cor and was one of his most trusted agents. [63] Their relationship was close enough that, despite him being her superior, Jet was able to speak out of line and remind him that while she is a government agent, she is her own person. [64]
Additionally, he was the one who gifted her the special echo, Crow Crow. [30]
Shadow Blade Kurt
Although their relationship was hostile, they first met in the Academy. Kurt was the only one who didn't treat her like a walking corpse. [65]
Song Sisters
Jet suspected that the Song sisters shared similar Flaws to her own, and felt a special sense of kinship with them. She contemplated what life would have been like had Ki Song adopted her. It was not too far-fetched a thought, as many of the daughters were adopted from the Outskirts at a young age. [66]
Trivia
Being the government agent assigned to watch Sleeper Sunless, Jet was the first person to congratulate him on completing his First Nightmare. [110]
Julius was the first to use her nickname 'Soul Reaper.'
Jet gave Sunny his citizenship and his first communicator. [111]
Jet reached out to the White Feather Clan and organised for Sunny to anchor in the Chained Isles. [112]
Effie once, jokingly, called her big sister. [113]
She once gifted Sunny an Ascended soul shard for his birthday, right before pitching the Antarctic war plans in the Academy’s cafeteria. She was able to acquire this due to her rank privileges in the Government. [114]
She took pride in her work, but working for the Government was a means to an end. [115]
She was barred from moving further up the Path of Ascension due to the Sovereigns limiting the number of Saints. [116]
As a Master, she could have turned a mundane human into a Hollow if she were very precise. [117]
Her official title was 'Colonel Jet, senior officer of the First Awakened Irregular Company of the Northern Quadrant Corps of the Evacuation Army.' [118]
Her government file was almost entirely blacked out, except for her name and rank. [119]
Although her body metabolises oxygen as normal, she does not need to breathe. [120]
She once rode on a dragon's back. [121]
Jet was referred to as a toy soldier when standing on Effie (Giantess form). [122] Effie then launched her into the air like a supersonic missile. [123]
During the battle with the Heart of Kanakht, Jet's Mist Blade took the form of a khopesh. [124]
She had never had much interest in history, but eventually grew to enjoy it. [125]
